Dave McClure and 500 Startups Joins the Accelerator Boom

‘Man about town’ investor Dave McClure who setup 500 Startups, the early-stage firm funder, is getting into the startup incubation business with its new 500 Startups Accelerator. Like the Ryan Academy Propeller, 500 startups is a support of Lean Startup Methodology, and the new accelerator follows another adaptation of the Techstars model.

With over 100 mentors in their network, 500 Accelerators has announced that 10 to 15 of those mentors will be “mentors in residence” who work at the Accelerator in  Mountain View. Interestingly they are not limiting themselves to the very early stage companies that Propeller for example supports, so  a company could start out at another incubator, then join the 500 Startups Accelerator later on. As these tend to be already funded, the size of equity and the deal will change in these situations.

For the usual early stage companies the deal is similar to other accelerators: new ventures will receive $25,000 to $100,000 in exchange for 5 percent of their equity. Details on 500 Startups can be found here. It will be interesting to see if this new accelerator joins the Techstars Network, as the Ryan Academy Propeller has done, in the future
