Untapped Patents Available for Entrepreneurs in Sweden

As reported in Springwise.com, the Mobile Heights Business Centre in Southern Sweden is a partnership between local industry, academia and the public sector. Just another business centre? Think again, this one offers approved participants access to a bank of unexplored patents, business ideas and solutions requested by industry. These include unused patents and ideas from companies such as Ericsson. The whole process is based on Open Innovation.

Anyone can apply for membership through a process that includes an interview and test to prove the applicant’s entrepreneurial drive. Once approved, members are presented with a wide variety of as-yet-untapped patents and other business ideas provided by participating members of the telecom industry.

In “Crash Lab” sessions led by professional business advisors, members can discuss ideas, while  representatives from industry drop in to advise. Similar to other accelerators, they can present that plan at an “Investment Day” open to active investors. The obligatory help in matters such as HR and Finance also apply.

The overall aim? To accelerate the growth of innovative mobile communication and life sciences startups. Sounds good to me. I wonder how many unused patents Irish higher education has notched up in the last ten years?
