UK SE Statistics

I was fortunate to be at an EVPA meeting last week (European Venture Philanthropy Association) where some interesting statistics (from JPA Consulting in the UK) were shown on the British social enterprise sector. According to the data (based partially on the Institute for Employment Studies Annual Small Business Survey) the UK has over 62,000 social enterprises, equalling 6% of all SME employers (not including sole traders). This equates to a £30 billion turnover sector, which directly employs 650,000 people. Of these 89% are based in urban environments. Of the 170,000 British charities it is estimated that over 50% of their income comes from trading or social enterprise activity.

Gordon, these are significant numbers that you’ve quoted. Yet again they illustrate the potential of the sector to grow in Ireland.
