Do we need a national organisation?

In many countries there are member organisations which double as ‘marketing’ for the sector and also as major lobby groups with government. In the US there is no doubt that the Social Enterprise Alliance (and the President’s own background) is one of the reasons why the Obama Presidency seems to be supporting the sector.

In the UK the Social Enterprise Coalition has done pretty well with the Labour governments in recent years, which can be seen by the UK Social Enterprise strategy and also the various schemes that they have developed to support the sector.

Do we need one over-arching organisation to represent the different parts of the sector? The relatively new Social Enterprise task force is definitely a step in the right direction. We need to box clever when it comes to this.
