Terracycle on Fire

A recent podcast by the Pat Kenny show on RTE outlined a number of recycling and upcycling ideas including flavour of the month, Terracycle. TerraCycle makes affordable, eco-friendly products from a wide range of different non-recyclable waste materials. With over 50 products available at major retailers like Walmart, Target, The Home Depot, and Whole Foods Market, TerraCycle is one of the fastest growing eco-friendly manufacturers in the world.

Another example of the upcycling/recycling trend, their website claims that their aim is to eliminate the idea of waste by finding innovative, unique uses for what would normally be called ‘garbage’. Started by a Princeton university student, TerraCycle has exclusive partnerships with major consumer goods companies such as Kraft Foods, Frito Lay (Pepsi), and Mars Wrigley. The company’s partnerships create free collection programs that pay schools and non-profits nationwide to collect used packaging such as drink pouches, energy bar wrappers and yogurt cups, cookie wrappers. The collected materials are upcycled into affordable, high quality products ranging from tote bags and purses to shower curtains and kites.

An interesting mix that makes Terracycle a type of company that the Ryan Academy has termed a ‘partial’ in that it has a more-than-profit element that we believe is a continuing trend particularly in the upcycling arena, that goes far beyond the normal corporate responsibility programmes. Expect to see more about this company in the coming months.
