Starbucks sponsors competition for reusable coffee cup

Entrepreneur magazine Fastcompany reports that Starbucks has agreed to sponsor Betacup’s contest to redesign the coffee cup. Founded in May 2009, Betacup was created to reduce the number of non-recyclable cups that are thrown away every year by creating a more convenient alternative to the reusable coffee cup. As 58 billion coffee cups are dumped each year in the US alone, it is not surprising that Betacup was created to reduce the number of cups tossed into landfills. Starbucks aims to serve all of its coffee in re-useable or recyclable cups by 2015. Through this competition Starbucks is offering $10,000 to the winner, and $10,000 to be split among the next best five. The closing date is June 15th. There will be many opportunities for great designers to come up with innovative ways to solve our waste issues.
