Technology Recycling

Another example of how people realise that trash can make good business sense, there has been a growing trend towards recycling mobile phones, from the Jack and Jill Foundation to commercial players who offer money in exchange for old phones. Only about 10% of phones in the US are recycled and there are similar low figures in Europe.

A company called EcoATM estimate that there are $25B in latent consumer assets available to be recycled in the US alone. This company provides Automated eCycling Stations for pricing and buy-back of used consumer electronics and mobile phones for trade-in/trade-up and recycling. Starting with mobile phones in 2008 ecoATM has expanded its solution to support a broader range of electronics, including portable consumer electronics and some larger devices. In June 2009 they installed the first Automated eCycling Station at large consumer electronics retailer and have now begun live in-store trials with mobile carrier stores.
